Right, this seemed to work for me. On the privacy settings for the child's Xbox Live account. Under the tab for XBox One / Windows 10 OnlSelect Allow for "Join multiplayer games" AND Allow for "You can create and join clubs". Then send an invite to the Realm. Worked for me with all other options set to blocked.
